Bali: Island of gods and demons ?

Island of balance and harmony of the forces ?

Island of the arts : painting, music, dance, handicraft -

Island of magnificent and mysterious rites and ceremonies ?

Bali – ‘the morning of the world’ ?

What is left  of Balinese traditions and culture, which have found their way into the collective consciousness of an admiring western world -  ever since Walter Spies, Miguel Covarubias, Collin McPhee and Vicky Baum ?

What remains after modernisation, mass media, mass tourism and globalisation left their marks?  After the Southeast Asia crisis, after political and social unrest in Indonesia, after ‘the bomb’, after tsunami and earthquakes,  afters Sars and avian flu ?

Is the enchanted and enchanting attitude, the contiguity of ceremonial traditions and everyday life still discernible? Do the sounds of the Gamelan, dance rituals, the fleeting shadows of Wayang and the daily sacrifices still come together in this very special, absolutely unique cultural ensemble? Did Balinese life preserve its outstanding aesthetics in spite of all the changes?

Attend a shadow play in the evening to celebrate the three-months day of a newborn child. Hundreds of eyes will follow the stories taken from the epos Mahabharata. All  the village will be there. And you in their midst of it…

The big gamelan group will play and envelop you in cascades of exotic sounds and thrilling syncopated rhythms. You will follow the rhythmic and melodic shifts, but beware! There’s a danger of falling into trance…

Experience the countless ritual ceremonies taking place almost every day in Bali. In the atrium of the Pura Puseh, the temple of origin, you can watch the male and female dancers, and admire their graceful movements and their dedication. How they merge with the character they embody. And you will notice how the role will enrapture the dancer and lead him to an almost magical performance.

Experience the countless ritual ceremonies, temple celebrations, sacrificial and thanksgiving celebrations taking place in the course of the Balinese year, of human life …

Visit artisans in Tejakula, Sembiran, Sawan and other villages of North Bali: Admire the handspun and handwoven silk and capas cloths in fascinatingly beautiful natural dyes with the traditional patterns of the Aga village Sembiran. Find individually handcarved objects for everyday use made of teak and coconut, products of the silver smith in Tejakula, figures of shadow play made from buffalo skin, verre églomisé paintings, gongs and other percussion instruments made of secret alloys, and watch the artisans do their work.
